What Does Our Decking Service Include?
Our decking service covers the complete design and installation of raised, ground-level and multi-level timber or composite decking. We handle everything from initial design consultation through groundwork preparation, structural frame construction, deck board laying, balustrade installation and finishing details including steps, lighting and integrated planters.
Who is it for? Homeowners who want a defined outdoor living and dining space. Properties with sloping gardens where decking can create usable level areas. Anyone who wants an attractive, low-maintenance alternative to a patio for entertaining, relaxation or family use.
When is it needed? Decking can be installed year-round, though spring and summer are the most popular times. If you are planning to host outdoor events, we recommend booking well in advance as our diary fills quickly during warmer months. Decking is also an excellent solution when a garden renovation is underway, as it complements landscaping, fencing and planting projects.
Why professional installation matters: Decking that is not properly supported will bounce, sag and eventually become unsafe. Boards that are not spaced correctly trap moisture, promoting rot and algae growth. A deck without proper ventilation underneath retains damp and deteriorates from below. We build every deck with a properly engineered subframe, correct board spacing, adequate ventilation and non-slip surfaces designed for Ayrshire's wet climate.
What Goes Wrong With Poor Decking Installation
The most common issue with DIY or poorly installed decking is structural failure. Joists spaced too far apart cause boards to flex and bounce underfoot. Over time this loosens fixings, creates gaps and eventually makes the deck unsafe. Replacing a badly built deck costs as much as building a new one — and you lose the use of the space during the work.
Moisture management is critical in Scotland's climate. Decking boards that sit directly on soil or do not have adequate airflow underneath rot from the bottom up. Surface water that is not managed creates algae — the number one cause of slipping on decking. We address both issues at the design stage, not after problems appear.
Cheap timber is another false economy. Untreated or poorly treated softwood warps, splits and turns grey within a single season. The boards may look fine initially, but within two years they need sanding, treating or replacing entirely. We use properly pressure-treated timber or composite materials that are designed to handle prolonged exposure to moisture without degradation.
Incorrect fixing is also common. Screws that are too short pull out. Nails work loose over time. Fixings that are not countersunk snag feet and clothing. Every board we lay is secured with the correct grade and length of stainless steel or coated screws, countersunk for a clean, safe finish.
Our Process
How We Work
Design Consultation
We visit your property, discuss how you want to use the space, take measurements and assess ground conditions. We present design options and material choices tailored to your budget.
Groundwork Preparation
We clear the area, level the ground, install weed membrane and create a stable foundation for the subframe. Drainage is addressed at this stage to prevent water pooling under the finished deck.
Subframe Construction
A structural timber frame is built using properly treated joists at correct spacings. Posts are set in concrete where the deck is raised. The frame is levelled precisely to ensure a flat, stable surface.
Deck Board Installation
Boards are laid with consistent spacing for drainage and expansion. Every board is fixed with stainless steel or coated screws, countersunk for a smooth finish. Cut edges are treated to prevent moisture ingress.
Finishing and Handover
Balustrades, steps, fascia boards and any additional features are installed. The completed deck is inspected, cleaned and handed over with care guidance for ongoing maintenance.
Why It Matters
The Benefits You Get
Usable Outdoor Space
Decking creates a defined area for dining, entertaining or relaxation — level, clean and ready to use whenever the weather allows.
Works on Any Terrain
Unlike patios, decking can bridge slopes, uneven ground and awkward spaces. It is the ideal solution for gardens where excavation would be impractical or expensive.
Added Property Value
A well-built deck is a genuine selling point. It creates the impression of additional living space and appeals to buyers looking for outdoor entertaining areas.
Quick Installation
Most domestic decking installations are completed within three to five days, far faster than equivalent patio projects that require extensive groundwork.
Composite Options Available
For minimal maintenance, composite decking requires no sanding, staining or treating. It resists rot, fading and algae, and comes in a wide range of colours and finishes.
Customisable Design
We build decks in any shape, size and configuration — including multi-level designs, built-in seating, integrated planters and lighting-ready conduit.
Decking Materials and Methods in Detail
Timber Decking
We use pressure-treated Scandinavian redwood for most timber decking projects. This is sustainably sourced softwood that has been treated under pressure with preservatives to resist rot, insect damage and fungal growth. With proper maintenance — an annual clean and recoat every two to three years — timber decking can last 15-20 years. We can also source hardwood decking (such as Balau or Iroko) for clients wanting a premium, longer-lasting natural timber finish.
Composite Decking
Composite decking is made from a blend of recycled wood fibres and plastic polymers. It does not rot, split, warp or require painting. Modern composite boards are available in realistic wood-grain finishes in a wide range of colours. They are more expensive than timber upfront but require virtually zero maintenance over a lifespan of 25+ years. We install composite decking from leading manufacturers using hidden clip fixing systems for a clean, screw-free surface.
Subframe Engineering
The subframe is the most critical element of any deck. We use treated C16 or C24 grade timber joists at 400mm centres for standard residential decking. For composite or heavier loads, we reduce spacing to 300mm. Bearer beams are supported on concrete pad foundations or adjustable pedestals depending on the design. Every subframe is levelled to within 3mm tolerance across its full span.
Non-Slip Solutions
Slippery decking is a serious safety concern, particularly in Scotland's damp climate. We offer grooved deck boards that channel water away from the surface, composite boards with textured anti-slip finishes, and retrofit anti-slip strips for existing decking. We also recommend annual pressure washing and algae treatment to maintain grip on timber surfaces.
Balustrades and Steps
Where decking is raised more than 600mm above ground level, building regulations require a balustrade. We install timber, metal and glass balustrade systems to complement the deck design. Steps are built with consistent riser heights and deep treads, often with non-slip nosings for safety. All balustrades meet current building standards for height and spacing.
